The name "Hong Kong", means "fragrant harbour", is derived from the area around present-day Wong Chuk Hang on Hong Kong Island where fragrant trees were once abundant and widely exported. The territory comprises of 262 islands. Hong Kong was a British colony from 1842 until the People's Republic of China resumed the exercise of sovereignty in 1997. Hong Kong primarily consists of Hong Kong Island, Lantau Island, Kowloon and the New Territories
